Welcome To Wolvesey Lodge 6818

What is Freemasonry?

One of the oldest secular social and charitable organisations in the world, modern Freemasonry's roots lie in the traditions of the medieval stonemasons who built our castles and cathedrals

We are a unique members’ organisation which has thrived for over 300 years. Having no political or religious affiliations, we comprise members of all ages, races, religions, cultures and backgrounds. We meet in our individual Lodges throughout the country where we have ceremonial traditions which encourage us both to be more tolerant and respectful and actively to fulfil our civic and charitable responsibilities; we also make time to eat, drink and meet together, and form lifelong friendships.

In today's world filled with uncertainty, these principles ring as true now as they have at any point in the organisation's history

Who are We?

The Lodge is named after Wolvesey Palace, the Bishop of Winchester’s official residence.

The badge of the Lodge, was designed by Bro. A. Barron-Renton, a Schoolmaster, of the Lodge of Economy The badge depicts, between the arms of the compasses and the square, a figure of Sagittarius - the archer with the body of a horse, one of the signs of the zodiac, the design being enclosed in a laurel wreath, with a 5 pointed star underneath. There is recall of ancient traditions in the choice of the Sagittarius, for it formed part of the Arms of Stephen of Blois (c1092/6 – 1154), the last Norman King who reigned from 1135-1154. Wolvesey Palace in Winchester was once the royal seat of King Alfred the Great. It was converted into a strong Norman fortress by Henry du Blois, Stephens Brother, and constantly besieged during the civil war that raged during reign of King Stephen. Eventually the fortifications were dismantled, but Wolvesey remained the residence of the Bishop of Winchester.

We remain true to the ideals of our Founders in ensuring that our ritual is to the highest standard, delivering ceremonies with warmth and meaning for the Candidates whilst also ensuring that our time together is conducted in perfect harmony and friendship, and, above all that we ENJOY our Freemasonry – ‘This is the Wolvesey Way’!
